Plan modes

When you open a plan, three working modes are available. Switch between them from a floating palette that you can move anywhere on the screen, and collapse into a small puck to clear the view.

Read-only mode lets you browse a plan and its annotations without accidentally creating new ones. Use it to:

  • Review observations already made.
  • Show the plan to a client or colleague without changing the data.
  • Browse photos and comments on existing annotations.

In read-only mode, tapping the plan does not create an annotation. You can zoom, pan and open existing annotations.

A hint next to the mode palette reminds you that you can press and hold a viewpoint for its actions. They work in read-only mode too, including Move: you can put a misplaced marker back in the right place without risking a new annotation. See The viewpoint menu.

To add a viewpoint from read-only mode, tap + in the plan toolbar. The app asks which mode to use: Visit (tap the plan, then take photos with the camera) or Catch-up (tap the plan, then pick photos you already took), and switches to it, ready for your tap.

Visit mode is the primary working mode on site. It lets you create new annotations by photographing them directly:

  1. Tap the plan where you see something to document.
  2. A marker appears. Drag your finger to orient the direction arrow (it shows where the photo was taken from).
  3. The camera opens automatically to take a photo. Tap Add another photo to take several in a row (see Photos and videos).

Catch-up mode works like visit mode, but instead of opening the camera, it opens your photo library. Use it when:

  • You took photos during a visit without attaching them to a plan.
  • You’re documenting a site after the fact, matching existing photos to the right locations on the plan.
  1. Tap the plan where you see something to document.
  2. Drag to orient the direction arrow.
  3. The photo library opens to select an existing image.
